Featured Snippets and SERP Features: How to Earn Each Result Type

The Google results page (SERP) is no longer just ten blue links. One query can show a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, images, videos, a map pack and AI Overviews on the same page. Each favours a different content type and different signals.

Below I summarise how each result type is chosen, based on Google's official documentation, and which steps help with which.

Short answer: There is no special markup for featured snippets; Google itself picks the part of a page that best answers the question. Write short, direct answers under clear question headings, build the right technical base for images and video, and strengthen your Google Business Profile for the local pack.

Which SERP features exist and what do they do?

Which features appear depends on search intent. These are the types I see most often:

Featured snippet
A short answer box above the results, taken from one page.
People Also Ask
Expandable related questions; each answer comes from a page.
Image results
Image blocks on the results page for visual queries.
Video and key moments
Video results and timestamps linking to the relevant part.
Local pack
A map and business list for queries with local intent.
AI Overviews
An AI-generated summary with supporting source links.

Some of these answer the user without a click. How to measure visibility in that case is covered in the zero-click search article.

How are featured snippets chosen?

According to Google's documentation, Google's systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a query and, if so, promote it. To the question “How can I mark my page as a featured snippet?”, the documented answer is: you can't.

Google's help page says snippets are chosen based on how well they answer the question and how helpful they are. Snippets are also subject to Google's content policies; if a site has many policy-violating snippets, Google may stop showing featured snippets from it.

In practice I see three formats: a short paragraph (definitions, “what is” questions), a list (steps, rankings) and a table (comparisons, prices, measurements). The query itself determines which format is natural.

How do you write snippet-friendly content?

Snippet-friendly
  • The heading is the question: “How is stamp duty calculated?”
  • The first sentence answers directly
  • Steps as a numbered list, comparisons as a table
  • Details and exceptions come after the answer
Not snippet-friendly
  • Vague heading: “Things to know”
  • The answer comes after three paragraphs of intro
  • Steps buried in one long paragraph
  • Data written inside an image instead of a table

This structure serves readers too, which is the point. The role of short answer blocks in conversational queries is covered in voice search SEO. To plan content this way, see my content strategy service.

How should you use People Also Ask?

Google's help page notes that featured snippets can also appear in the People Also Ask section. Showing up there is really about giving a snippet-worthy answer to the related question.

I mostly use the box as a research tool:

  • Note the questions shown for the target query.
  • Add the ones your page does not answer as subheadings or FAQ items.
  • Write a direct one or two sentence answer right under each question heading.
  • Merge near-identical questions under one heading.

How do you earn image, video and local pack results?

These three result types run on different signals from text snippets:

Result typeDepends onFirst step
Image resultsTopic of the host page, alt text, descriptive file nameOriginal images placed near related text, meaningful alt text
Video and key momentsVideo on a crawlable page, VideoObject data, chaptersA dedicated watch page per key video, timestamps or Clip markup
Local packPer Google: relevance, distance and prominenceComplete, accurate Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent business info

Video details are in the video SEO article; the basis of the local pack is covered in Google Business Profile and the local SEO guide.

FAQ rich results and the role of structured data

Structured data still underpins many result types such as products, reviews, events and videos. See which type fits which result in the schema and structured data guide and draft JSON-LD with the schema generator. Featured snippets need no structured data.

How do AI Overviews relate to snippets?

Google's AI features documentation says there are no additional requirements or special markup to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode; the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Clear, snippet-friendly content is the same foundation for both.

Snippet controls are shared as well: nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet limit both classic snippets and what is shown in AI features. To remove a page from featured snippets only, Google suggests trying a lower max-snippet value, though the outcome is not certain.

Details on being cited in AI summaries are in appearing as a source in Google AI Overviews, with the wider framework in the GEO implementation guide. To review your visibility in these results, see GEO consulting or book an intro call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a featured snippet increase clicks?

It depends on the query. If the answer is complete in the box, clicks may stay limited; for queries that need detail, snippet visibility can turn into visits. Judge the effect by tracking impressions and click-through rate for the query in Search Console.

Do I need to rank first to get a snippet?

Google's documentation states no ranking requirement. In practice I see snippets usually taken from pages already on page one for the query, so the page first needs to be a strong result.

I lost a snippet. Why?

Snippets are not fixed. Google may find a page that answers better, its reading of the intent may change, or an edit may have made your answer less clear. Compare the relevant section with the current results page.

How do I track which queries show my snippet?

Search Console has no separate filter for featured snippets. You can check target queries by hand or use rank tracking tools that report SERP features.

Does structured data improve snippet chances?

Google's documentation says there is no way to mark a page as a featured snippet. Snippets come from visible page content, so what matters is how clearly the answer is written.

Can I stop a page from appearing in snippets?

Yes. The nosnippet rule blocks all snippets on a page, and the data-nosnippet attribute blocks a specific section of text. Remember these also limit what is shown in AI features.
