Voice Search and Conversational Queries: Preparing Content for Q&A

Voice search has been pitched as "the next big wave" for years; I will not make that kind of boom claim here. What has actually changed is this: people type and speak longer, more conversational questions into the search box, voice assistants and AI chats.
For content, that creates one shared requirement: pages that understand the question in its natural form and open with a short, clear answer. Below I explain how to build this so it works for both voice and typed search.
Short answer: Voice and conversational queries do not need a separate type of content. Pages that turn real user questions into headings, give a clear 1-3 sentence answer under each heading and keep local details (address, hours, service area) current are easier to use in both voice and typed search.
How do conversational queries differ?
Typed searches are often short and clipped; when we speak, we use full sentences. In Turkish, the difference shows especially in question suffixes and phrases like "nearest" and "open now".
| Typed query | Conversational query | Underlying intent |
|---|---|---|
| dentist kadikoy | Is there a dentist open right now in Kadıköy? | Local and urgent |
| boiler service price | How much does a boiler service cost and how often is it needed? | Information and decision |
| e-invoice meaning | Do I have to switch to e-invoicing? | Applying to own situation |
| rent increase rate | How much can rent go up this year? | Current rule |
The best sources for these question patterns are long queries in Search Console and real questions reaching your customer service. I explain the method in the keyword research guide.
Where do voice assistants get their answers?
In March 2025 Google announced that the Google Assistant experience on mobile would gradually move to Gemini. Siri, Alexa and chat-based assistants may each draw on different search and data sources; it is best not to make firm generalisations about which one uses which infrastructure.
I cover how answer boxes and AI Overviews choose sources on Google's side in the Google AI Overviews optimisation article.
Local intent: "near me" and "open now" queries
A large share of conversational queries is local: directions, opening hours, phone numbers. For these, the answer often comes not from your site but from your Google Business Profile.
Since the Q&A feature was removed from Business Profile, answering common questions on your own site matters even more. You will find profile management in the Google Business Profile article and local page structure in the local SEO guide; for a concrete clinic example, see local SEO for dental clinics.
A method for preparing content for Q&A
- Collect questionsCombine questions from Search Console, sales, WhatsApp and email into one list.
- Group by intentGather questions that need the same answer under one heading.
- Turn into headingsUse the most natural phrasing as an h2 or h3.
- Write the answer firstPut a direct 1-3 sentence answer right under the heading.
- Add the detailPlace conditions, exceptions and examples after the answer.
This structure also suits featured snippets; details are in the featured snippets and SERP features article.
How to write a short, clear answer block
When a voice assistant reads an answer aloud, the user may not be looking at a screen. So the answer has to make sense even when lifted out of context.
- Repeats the subject of the question
- Gives the conclusion in the first sentence
- States figures and conditions clearly
- Is understandable in one breath when read aloud
- Opens with "This topic is very important"
- Leaves the answer for the third paragraph
- Relies on earlier text with "as mentioned above"
- Is full of brackets and abbreviations
Example: for "How often should a boiler be serviced?", opening with a standalone sentence like "The service interval is set by the manufacturer; follow the one in your boiler's user manual." is more useful than a long intro.
The real role of structured data in voice search
Expectations around structured data need to be set correctly:
- speakable: Still listed as beta in Google's documentation and defined for English-language users in the US and news publishers publishing in English. It currently has no practical use for Turkish content.
- FAQPage: Valid markup that can help machines understand content, but Google has not shown FAQ rich results in Search since 7 May 2026.
- LocalBusiness and Organization: Make address, hours and contact details machine-readable; they must match the visible information on the site exactly.
You can set up this markup following the rules in the schema structured data guide and prepare the code with the schema generator.
A voice search checklist
- Page headings are derived from real user questions.
- Every question heading has a short answer that can be read on its own.
- Business Profile hours, address and phone are current.
- The page loads fast on mobile and meets Core Web Vitals thresholds.
- Common questions are answered on the site as visible text.
In appointment-based sectors, this work turns directly into calls and bookings; I describe the approach on the healthcare SEO page. If you want to review your site's Q&A structure together, see SEO consulting or book a call.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I create separate pages for voice search?
No. A user asking the same question by typing or speaking expects the same answer. Strengthening existing pages with question headings and short answer blocks is cleaner than creating separate pages.
Can I measure voice search traffic separately?
Search Console does not show voice and typed queries as a separate dimension. Filtering long, question-style queries with regex and tracking their trend is an indirect but practical method.
Do Turkish characters cause problems in voice search?
How speech is transcribed is outside your control. What you control is using Turkish characters correctly on the page and one consistent spelling of your brand name; that is the soundest approach for matching.
Should content be written differently for smart speakers?
On screenless devices, the user cannot see tables or images. That makes it even more important for the first sentence of the answer to stand alone; tables and lists add value for devices with screens.
Is voice search mainly important for local businesses?
Its effect is most tangible for local queries, because the result can turn directly into a call or directions. For informational queries, the same Q&A structure also helps with AI answers and featured snippets.
Does page speed affect voice search?
There is no voice-specific speed threshold; the general Core Web Vitals thresholds apply: LCP up to 2.5 seconds, INP up to 200 ms, CLS up to 0.1. Details are in the Core Web Vitals article.
