Zero-Click Search: Staying Visible When Results Don't Get Clicked

"Our impressions are growing but clicks are flat" is a line I have heard at almost every reporting meeting over the past two years. Often the cause is not a technical error: users find what they need on the results page and never visit a site. This is called zero-click search.

This article covers the result types that need no click, how to measure visibility in that situation and which queries are worth investing content in. I deliberately give no industry-wide rates; what matters for you is the picture in your own Search Console data.

Short answer: Zero-click search is a search where the user's question is answered on the results page (AI Overviews, featured snippets, knowledge panels, the local pack, direct answer boxes) and no site gets clicked. For these queries, success should be measured not only by clicks but alongside impressions, branded search and Business Profile interactions.

What is zero-click search and why does it happen?

Some questions naturally end with a short answer: an exchange rate, a pharmacy's closing time, a one-sentence definition. When Google can show that answer directly on the results page, the user has no reason to visit a site.

This is not the same for every query. For comparison and decision queries like "Which CRM software should I choose?", users usually want to look at more than one source. That is why zero-click should be treated not as a disaster but as behaviour that varies by query type.

Which result types need no click?

The main elements that answer partly or fully on the results page are:

Result typeTypical queryYour opportunity
AI OverviewsExplanations and how questionsBeing cited as a supporting link
Featured snippetDefinitions, lists, stepsYour brand and page shown at the top
Knowledge panelBrand, person, organisation namesAccurate description, logo and official profiles
Local pack and mapNear me, service plus districtCalls, directions and website clicks
Direct answersExchange rates, weather, calculationsUsually none; not worth content investment

I explain how featured snippets and other SERP features are won in the featured snippets and SERP features article, and how to get cited in AI Overviews in the Google AI Overviews optimisation article.

How do you measure visibility without clicks?

According to Search Console's help documentation, an impression counts when an item appears where the user can see it on the results page, and all links in an AI Overview share one position. Google's AI features documentation adds that traffic from these features is included in the "Web" search type in the Performance report.

Impressions
The core visibility signal by query and page; track it independently of clicks.
Branded search
The trend in queries containing your brand name can show the indirect effect of visibility.
Business Profile
Calls, direction requests and website clicks show engagement in the local pack.
Conversions
If clicks fall but visitors convert better, the situation should be read differently.

I explain how to combine these signals into one dashboard in the SEO reporting guide. To separate visits from AI assistants in GA4, see the GA4 AI traffic article.

Which queries are worth writing content for?

Instead of producing content for every query, weigh the query's value to you together with the likelihood of a click. The scoring below is a simplified version of the framework I use when setting priorities on client sites:

Content priority by query type
Comparison and decision queries
9pts
Local service queries
8pts
How-to queries
6pts
Short definition queries
4pts
Rates, times, calculations
1pts

Priority score (1-10), the author's assessment; it varies by industry and business model.

Invest
  • Queries where users weigh several options
  • Questions tied directly to your service or product
  • Topics where you can offer original data or experience
Deprioritise
  • Questions with a one-word answer
  • Traffic queries weakly linked to your business
  • Definition pages where everyone says the same thing

To turn this prioritisation into a content calendar, the content strategy guide offers a step-by-step method.

Making your brand stand out in zero-click results

Even without a click, if users see your brand name on the results page, that is a touchpoint. To make it count:

  • Use your brand name naturally in paragraphs that could become snippets.
  • Hint at the user's next step (pricing, booking, comparison) in titles and meta descriptions.
  • Build visuals and tables so the user wants to see the rest of the answer.
  • Keep your Business Profile complete with photos, services and current hours.

For local searches, the framework is in the local SEO guide, and the profile side is covered in the Google Business Profile article.

A reporting and decision flow for zero-click

Monthly review flow
  1. Find falling clicks
List queries whose clicks dropped while impressions held.
  2. Look at the results page
Check manually whether AI Overviews, a snippet or a local pack appears.
  3. Classify the value
Label each query as decision, local, informational or direct answer.
  4. Choose an action
Strengthen the page, reposition it or lower its priority.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does zero-click search make SEO pointless?

No. Zero-click behaviour is most visible on short-answer queries, which often have low commercial value. For decision and local service queries, users usually look at more than one source; strategy should shift toward those queries.

Should I use nosnippet to get out of a featured snippet?

This is usually not advised, because nosnippet also removes the preview in classic results and may reduce clicks. Only in special cases such as paid content, consider excluding specific sections with data-nosnippet.

My click-through rate dropped; could it be a penalty?

If average position and impressions are stable while CTR falls, look at those queries' results pages first; a new AI Overview or SERP feature may have appeared. If you suspect a manual action, check the Manual actions report in Search Console.

Can I attribute a rise in branded search to zero-click visibility?

A firm causal link is not possible; branded search is also affected by ads, PR and social media. Still, if it rises alongside visibility while other channels show no clear change, you can report it as a supporting indicator.

Should I create separate pages for zero-click queries?

Usually not. Answering short-answer queries as a clear paragraph within a more comprehensive page suits both users and site structure better. A thin page built only for that query rarely adds value.

How are local businesses affected by zero-click?

In the local pack, users can call or get directions directly, and that interaction does not show up as a website click. That is why Business Profile performance data matters as much as Search Console data for local businesses.
