Yoast or Rank Math? Choosing a WordPress SEO Plugin in 2026

Anyone building a WordPress site eventually hits the same question: Yoast SEO or Rank Math? Both are widely used, regularly updated and cover the core SEO tasks in their free versions. Across the sites I consult on, I see good results with either; what decides it is the site's needs and how the team prefers to work.

The feature details here come from both plugins' official sites and WordPress.org plugin pages as of October 2026. I don't quote prices; check current pricing for the paid tiers on their official sites. I have no sponsorship or partnership with either plugin.

Short answer: In their free versions, Yoast SEO and Rank Math both cover the essentials, including XML sitemaps, breadcrumbs, basic schema and llms.txt. Rank Math's free version also includes a redirect manager, a 404 monitor and Search Console integration, while Yoast keeps its redirect manager and internal linking suggestions in Premium. Choose Yoast for readability analysis and a simple workflow, Rank Math for many modules in one plugin.

Yoast SEO vs Rank Math: free versions compared

“Verify in official docs” in the table doesn't mean the feature is missing; it means the official pages I reviewed didn't state it clearly for that tier.

Yoast's free version also offers canonical URL management and a bulk editor. Rank Math's WordPress.org page lists local SEO tools and WooCommerce support with automatic schema and meta tags in the free version.

What do Yoast Premium and Rank Math PRO add?

The paid tiers add features that save time beyond the basics. The highlights from the official pages:

  • Yoast Premium: a redirect manager with bulk tools and CSV import/export, internal linking suggestions, up to 5 keyphrases, AI tools such as AI Generate and AI Optimize, IndexNow and more schema types.
  • Yoast add-ons: Local SEO and Video SEO are offered as separate paid modules.
  • Rank Math PRO: unlimited focus keywords, CSV import/export for redirects, scheduled redirects and .htaccess sync.
  • Rank Math PRO also lists Google News and video sitemaps, advanced GA4 integration and more frequent Google data fetching.

My advice: use the free version for a few months before upgrading and note which gaps you actually feel. For many business websites the free versions are enough.

When should you choose Yoast, and when Rank Math?

On sites with larger content teams, where writers benefit from readability and keyword feedback as they write, Yoast's built-in readability analysis and simple workflow work well. The connected schema graph Yoast builds automatically is also a solid base if you want your organisation described consistently.

For small teams that want redirects, 404 tracking and Search Console data in one panel without extra plugins, the modules in Rank Math's free version are practical. For WooCommerce stores with many product pages, compare what each plugin offers for e-commerce on its official pages. If the platform decision is still open, the e-commerce platform SEO comparison covers other options.

If one of them is already installed and working well, switching just because the other seems more popular brings no direct SEO gain. The plugin determines how easily you configure things, not how you rank.

What should you watch for when switching SEO plugins?

Switching plugins is like a small site migration; without care you can lose titles, meta descriptions or noindex settings. My checklist:

  • Back up the database and files before the switch.
  • Record titles, meta descriptions, canonicals and robots tags for key pages in a spreadsheet.
  • Use the new plugin's import tool, then compare source code on sample pages.
  • Export redirects, move them to the new system and check for gaps.
  • Don't leave two SEO plugins active at once; you may get duplicate meta tags and duplicate schema output.
  • If the sitemap URL changed, submit the new one in Search Console.

A 301 redirect generator makes it easier to tidy up the redirect list. If some pages drop out of the index after the switch, the post on fixing “Crawled – currently not indexed” helps with diagnosis. If URLs are changing too, read the site migration SEO guide.

A plugin isn't enough: the rest of technical SEO on WordPress

An SEO plugin manages meta tags, the sitemap and basic schema, but hosting quality, theme code, caching, image optimisation and internal linking sit outside it. A plugin's “green light” doesn't mean the page will rank well. For the full picture, the technical SEO guide and the Core Web Vitals post are good starting points.

If you want to extend the schema your plugin outputs, for instance by detailing LocalBusiness or author profiles, see the schema and structured data guide and the schema generator.

Should llms.txt and AI features influence your choice?

Both plugins can generate an llms.txt file; Yoast added it to the free version in June 2025, and Rank Math offers it as a module you switch on in the dashboard. llms.txt isn't a widely adopted standard yet, so its impact shouldn't be overstated. I cover what it does and its limits in the llms.txt guide.

AI writing features can save time but don't replace editorial review, and on their own they aren't a reason to pick one plugin over the other. If you'd like to review your WordPress site's technical setup together, see SEO consulting or get in touch through the contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run Yoast and Rank Math at the same time?

I don't recommend it. Both output titles, meta descriptions, canonicals and schema, so with both active the same tags may appear twice on a page. Even during a switch, deactivate the old one once the import is done.

Will switching plugins affect my rankings?

Not directly, if settings are carried over correctly, because Google sees the page output rather than the plugin. Problems usually come from lost metadata, a changed sitemap URL or noindex tags added by mistake.

Is the free version enough for a business website?

For most business sites, yes. Sitemaps, meta management, basic schema and breadcrumbs are all in the free versions. Consider a paid tier if you need heavy redirect management, many tracked keywords or extra schema types.

If the plugin's SEO score is green, will the page rank?

No. The score is a helper showing whether certain on-page checks are met; it isn't Google's assessment. Whether the content genuinely answers the search and the site's overall authority matter far more.

Can Yoast be used outside WordPress?

Yoast has a separate app for Shopify, and its official help pages include documentation for the Shopify version. Check its official page to see whether the feature set matches the WordPress version.

Which plugin is faster?

Speed depends more on hosting, theme and the number of active modules than on the plugin itself. Whichever you choose, turn off modules you don't use and measure before and after with PageSpeed Insights.
