How Does Your Brand Get Cited in Perplexity?

Perplexity is an answer engine that responds to questions by searching the web. According to its official help centre, content is sourced from the web in real time as you ask, and every answer includes citations and links to original sources so you can verify the information. That gives brands a concrete opportunity: being cited in a Perplexity answer can mean both visibility and a qualified visit.

In this post I cover the Perplexity-specific part: crawler access, page structure that is ready to be cited, and measurement. I cover the general GEO process, meaning the question set, entity clarity and brand mentions, in detail in the GEO implementation guide, so I won't repeat it here.

Short answer: To be cited by Perplexity, your site first has to be open to PerplexityBot, and then you need pages that answer questions directly and verifiably. Perplexity does not publish its source-selection formula, so the soundest approach is to strengthen the third-party sources that mention your brand alongside your own site, and to test the results regularly.

How does Perplexity show sources in its answers?

Perplexity lists the sources it uses, with links, inside and alongside the answer text; users can click to see which page a claim came from. The help centre says answers are supported by citations from news organisations, academic publications and established content sources.

How sources are selected and ranked, however, is not officially documented in detail. Plenty of articles claim "Perplexity looks at these five signals"; most of them are inferences from observation, not official documentation. I only tell clients what can be verified: for Perplexity to cite your page it has to be able to access it, and the page has to contain a clear answer to the question asked. The rest we learn by testing.

PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User: is your site accessible?

Perplexity's developer documentation defines two separate user agents. Knowing the difference matters for getting the robots.txt decision right:

User agentPurpose (per official documentation)robots.txt behaviour
PerplexityBotSurfacing and linking websites in Perplexity search results; stated not to be used to crawl content for AI foundation modelsFollows robots.txt; Perplexity recommends allowing it
Perplexity-UserFetching a page during a user's question to improve the answer and link to that pageStated to generally ignore robots.txt, because the fetch is user-requested

If you want to be cited, do not block PerplexityBot in your robots.txt. A simple allow rule looks like this:

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

The problem I see most often in client work is not robots.txt but bot-protection rules at the CDN or firewall: site owners leave a setting on that blocks every AI crawler without realising it. Perplexity publishes IP ranges for both agents, so your security team can write allow rules against those lists. I cover crawl access checks in general in the technical SEO guide.

How do you write a page Perplexity will cite?

When Perplexity builds an answer, it often uses a specific section rather than a whole page. So I write pages in a way that each part stays accurate and meaningful when read on its own:

  • Answer right under the heading: the first two or three sentences under a question-style heading answer it directly.
  • Verifiable, concrete facts: dates, scope, conditions and process details instead of vague marketing lines.
  • Comparison tables: for "A or B" questions, a row-by-row comparison can be carried straight into an answer.
  • Freshness signals: a visible last-updated date and a clear note of what changed.
  • Author and organisation details: profile and company pages that show who wrote the content and with what expertise.

I explain which page types to prioritise with these rules in the content strategy guide. A glossary with short definitions of common terms is also a good citation candidate; see the AI and SEO glossary for an example.

Why do third-party sources matter so much in Perplexity?

For recommendation questions such as "which firm should I choose in Istanbul", Perplexity does not only look at your site; comparison articles, industry lists, news, forums and review platforms can all appear as sources. Praising yourself on your own page does not carry the same weight as an independent publication mentioning you.

So when I test in Perplexity, I don't only ask "was my brand cited" but also "which sites were cited, and am I on them". I explain how to earn these mentions, linked or unlinked, in the post on brand mentions.

How do you test whether Perplexity cites your brand?

Trying a single query once is misleading; answers can vary with time, phrasing and context. I run a fixed question set every month and record results in the same template. I describe how to build that question set in the post on testing brand visibility in ChatGPT; the same method applies to Perplexity.

MetricWhat it measuresHow to record it
MentionDoes your brand appear in the answer text?Yes/no per question
CitationIs one of your pages among the sources? The cited URL
Third-party sourcesWhich external sites were shown, and do they mention you?Site list and notes
Description accuracyIs what's said about your brand correct? The error and its likely source
Share of voiceHow often are you mentioned versus competitors?Brands mentioned per question

To see visits from Perplexity to your site in GA4, you need a referrer-based channel definition; the method is in the post on separating ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic in GA4.

What are the common mistakes with Perplexity?

  • Blocking PerplexityBot unknowingly through security settings and never checking.
  • Putting key information only inside images, PDFs or interactive widgets instead of accessible text.
  • Producing content based on unverified "signal lists" about source selection.
  • Planting fake or incentivised content on forums and review platforms; it breaks platform rules and carries reputational risk.
  • Focusing only on Perplexity and neglecting Google; Google AI Mode in Türkiye rests on the same content foundation.

Most of these mistakes are fixed with small settings; the hard part is patiently building citable content and a presence in independent sources. If you want to turn that into a plan, see the GEO consulting and content strategy service pages, or reach me through the contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to pay to be cited in Perplexity?

No. The sources in answers are pages Perplexity finds on the web and considers relevant to the question. There is no official paid route to organic citations; for advertising or partnership options, check Perplexity's current official pages.

If I block PerplexityBot, will my site disappear from Perplexity?

According to the official documentation, PerplexityBot is used to surface and link sites in search results, so blocking it hurts that visibility. The user-triggered Perplexity-User agent is stated to generally ignore robots.txt, but I would not base a visibility strategy on that.

Does Perplexity cite Turkish-language content?

Perplexity can answer questions in Turkish and cite Turkish pages as sources. Which language's sources get chosen depends on the question and the content available, so it matters to have clear content in the language your target customers use.

Is being cited in Perplexity related to Google rankings?

Perplexity does not disclose in detail which search infrastructure or signals it uses for source selection, so claiming a direct link would be wrong. Crawlable, clear and trustworthy content works on both sides, though.

How long do changes take to show up in Perplexity answers?

Perplexity says it sources content from the web at the time of the question, so some changes can show up quickly. Changes in third-party sources and overall source preference take longer, so judge results with monthly testing rather than a single try.

What should I do if Perplexity gets facts about my brand wrong?

Use the source links in the answer to find which page the wrong information came from. Try to get that source updated, and publish the correct information clearly, with a date, on your own site. You can also use the feedback options in Perplexity's interface.
